The Rottnest Surf Festival

Surfing Western Australia
Rottnest Island, Western Australia
28 April - 7 May, 2017

The festival will combine high performance shortboarding and SUP divisions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 April, 2017 - The iconic and picturesque Rottnest Island located 30 kilometres off the Perth metropolitan coastline, is set to play host to some of the best surfing talent in Australia with the Rottnest Surf Festival set to kick off next week.
The festival will combine high performance shortboarding and rapidly developing stand up paddleboarding (SUP) divisions over a seven day competition window.
Incorporating the second stop of the Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) Pro Am Series, as well as the Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic and WA SUP Titles, close to 100 of the country’s best shortboard & SUP riders are set to participate.
“The Island is delighted to welcome back the HIF Pro Am Series & Rottnest SUP Classic in 2017,” said Rottnest Island Events Coordinator Deone Van Der Westhuizen. “These exciting surfing competitions are an integral part of our calendar of events and attract visitors to our world class surf breaks.”
“It’s fantastic to see Surfing WA running consecutive events on Rottnest Island, and the festival is unlike anything else currently run on the Island, attracting solid visitor numbers in our autumn shoulder months.”
Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks echoed similar sentiments and is looking forward to back-to-back events on Rottnest.
“The Rottnest Surf Festival will bring together some of the best and most hardened waterman from around WA and Australia to one of the state’s most iconic and consistent surfing locations,” said Majeks. “It's always exciting to head over to Rottnest, there's a real sense of adventure around the events and it's a true test for our competitors."
The HIF Pro Am Series will kick off the Rottnest Surf Festival next Friday and will feature some of WA’s best up and coming talent, including 2016 Open Men's State Champion & round one event winner Jerome Forrest (Margaret River), who’ll be out to repeat his efforts on Rottnest.
Forrest will face stiff competition from experienced surfing stalwarts and some of the state's young rising stars, as he looks to defend his State Title in 2017.
The Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic offers the richest prize purse for a SUP surfing event in WA  and will see the return of defending Men's and Women's champions Kai Bates (NSW) and Shakira Westdorp (QLD).
Western Australia has been a happy hunting ground for both Bates and Westdorp, with the pair capturing Australian SUP Titles in Geraldton when they were last here in August.
Local WA SUP talent set to challenge on home soil include, current Over-40 Australian Champion Rick Jakovich (Gracetown), former AFL player Dave Muir (Fremantle), and young gun Wes Fry (Bicton).
Stand Up Surf Shop co-owner Cameron McKay is ecstatic to see the Rottnest Classic return bigger and better in 2017.
“We are stoked to be presenting Australia’s premier SUP surf event for the third year in a row,” said McKay. “After the success of last two year’s it was an easy decision to  make it happen once again.”
The Rottnest Classic will coincide with the first event of the WA SUP Titles, which will help determine the team for this years Toyota Australian SUP Titles which will be held in Queensland in November.
The powerful reef breaks off Strickland Bay and Stark Bay will be the prime locations for both events and provide arguably the best and most challenging waves on Rottnest Island.
