Surfboard fin subject of new TV episode with science focus

Environment News

Episode is part of series on the power of “citizen science”

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 April, 2017 - Smartfin, a surfboard fin that houses sensors for measuring multiple ocean parameters like salinity, pH, temperature, location, and wave characteristics during surf sessions, stars in the latest episode of the PBS series “The Crowd & The Cloud.”

The show focuses on the power of “citizen science” and chronicles how the smartfin allows the everyday surfer help gather data while simply surfing. The data collected is made available to scientists worldwide conducting research.

The fin, which can be added to any existing surfboard and performs just the same as a regular fin, automatically turns on and starts recording data when movement is detected. The battery is recharged by removing the fin and placing it on a Qi wireless charging pad.

The data becomes accessible in near real-time, pairing with a smartphone using Bluetooth once the surfer comes ashore.
