Jake Elkington Wins Opening Encounter at Jeep World Junior Surfing Championship in Australia

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 January, 2018 - South Africa’s Jake Elkington started his challenge for honours at the World Surf League (WSL) Jeep World Junior Championship (WJC) by winning his opening heat and progressing directly to Round 3 of the sport’s most prestigious event for surfers aged 18-and-under.

Competing in clean one metre waves at Bombo Beach at Kiama, NSW, Australia, the 2017 WSL Africa Junior champion from Kommetjie stayed busy throughout the 25 minute encounter. Posting his counting scores of 6.43 and 5.67 (each out of 10) on his last two rides, Elkington overtook his opponents Rio Waida (IND) and Ocean Macedo (HAW) who were relegated to cutthroat Round 2 elimination heats.

Of the five men and two women in the WSL Africa regional squad who received coveted invitations to compete in the annual yearend event, only Elkington advanced directly to Round 3.

Adin Masencamp (Strand), who finished 17th in the 2016 WJC last January, placed third behind Hawaiian standout Barron Mamiya and Jhonny Guerrero Yauri (PER) in his opening clash. The former WSL Africa junior champ  and will be up against Te Kehukehu Butler (NZL) when competition resumes with the winner moving through to join the Round 1 winners in Round 3 and the loser eliminated from the event.

Joshe Faulkner (Jeffreys Bay) and Max Elkington, Jake’s younger sibling, were unfortunate to be drawn together in Heat 9. Joh Azuchi (JAP) posted a 6.50 on his first ride and that proved to be the only score over four points in the heat and he went on dispatch the South African pair to Round 2, where the seeding will see them meet again in Heat 8 of Round 2, with only the winner remaining in contention.

Ford van Jaarsveldt (Kommetjie) was awarded a wildcard to compete in the WJC and came close to winning his opening match-up after earning a 6.67, the highest single score of his first heat. But he was overtaken by Che Allen (BRB) who needed a 5.34 for the heat win and was rewarded with a 5.97 on his final ride. Van Jaarsveldt will face Ryland Rubens (USA) in Round 2.

WSL Africa women’s junior champ Sophie Bell (Salt Rock) and runner-up Kayla Nogueira (uMhlanga) each finished third in their respective heats. The highly experienced Bell will take on Alyssa Spencer (USA) in Round 2 while debutant Nogueira needs to overcome the threat posed by local Zahli Kelly (AUS).

The 2017 Jeep World Junior Championship will run from January 4-12 at Bombo Beach in Kiama on the Beautiful South Coast of NSW. It will feature the top 36 Men and 18 Women Junior Surfers from around the globe. All the action can followed live on www.worldsurfleague.com or the WSL App starting from 10 pm (SA time) daily.
