Increase in swell and wind makes for disorganized lineup

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 May, 2017 - The fourth stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour, the Oi Rio Pro, has been called OFF for the day due to messy conditions and unfavorable winds on offer at Praia de Itaúna in Saquarema. 

"We do have an increase in the swell today, but the lineup is very lumpy and disorganized," Travis Logie, WSL Deputy Commissioner, said. "We are calling competition OFF for the day. We have lots of swell lining up all week, but we still have to deal with those tricky winds. Tomorrow's winds are supposed to be lighter, but we want to reassess it again in the morning to be sure. We will come back tomorrow and make the next call." 

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:45 am local time to assess conditions and make the next call. When competition resumes, men's Round 5 will provide one last opportunity for the surfers to make the final series of the Oi Rio Pro presented by Corona.

2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) will be up against event wildcard Yago Dora (BRA) in Round 5 Heat 2. This match-up with see two of the best progressive aerialists do battle for the win.

World No. 2 Jordy Smith (ZAF) will look to earn a second CT win this season, but will first need to get through Julian Wilson (AUS) in Round 5 Heat 3. Kanoa Igarashi (USA) and Matt Wilkinson (AUS) will go head-to-head in Round 5 Heat 4. Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) will be up against 2012 WSL Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) in the opening heat of Round 5. 

Surfline, official forecaster for the Oi Rio Pro, are calling for: Strong S windswell and swell mix will peak Tuesday and ease on Wednesday. Side/onshore winds ease some on Tuesday compared to Monday and we expect much lighter wind by Wednesday morning. Another strong swell, this one from the SSE, will fill in for the end of the week, likely peaking late Thur-Fri before easing by Saturday. Light wind is possible Thursday, especially in the morning, before increasing sideshore winds develop for Fri-Sat.
