Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 March, 2017 - NZ Surfing Mag rolls straight out of a long hot summer for some parts of the country and hits the shelves in time for some wet weather reading, as this weather bomb moves on through.
In this 174th instalment we have a heap of unique photographic and editorial views for you to feast on.
On the COVER we feature the most barrelled man in NZ, Maz Quinn who recently announced his retirement from competitive surfing after 28 years of pulling on a rash and winning events all over the globe, thankfully Maz is as hungry as ever and will still be tearing the NZ lineups apart wherever he chooses to paddle out. So we will all still get to witness one of the great phenomenas of NZ surfing for many more years to come.
The 54th National Surfing Champs presented by Health 2000 is one event we have never missed since publishing began back in 1985. The Nationals are where the best surfers doing the best surfing can be found and we feature the pivotal moments and the performances of this years championships. While there were many new champions crowned the 2017 Championships will be most remembered for Billy Stairmand breaking a 30 year old long standing record held by Wayne Parkes and Iain ‘Ratso’ Buchanan and becoming our first ever 6X National Open Mens surfing Champion. All Hail the G.O.A.T.
We hit the road with Pita Pit for the Pita Pit Roady along with the Raglan Surf Academy who roll down to the East Coast in time to experience a three day black out power cut! This threw the coast in a scramble and the groms got to experience living life off the grid for a few days, as well as scoring an epic swell at breaks up and down the coast.
Our Exposure Photo Spread showcases the many epic sessions that have occurred over the summer months with lineups to drool over.
With a thumping swell sending shudders through the very bedrock NZ’s foundations are built upon only a week into the New Year, we were on hand to capture an epic big wave paddle session we aptly titled ‘Step Up If You Dare!’ Featuring Bobby Hansen and Blair Stewart and the biggest swell to hit these parts in eight years.
Inside this issue we also feature the latest technology from the best wetsuit manufacturers on the planet. NZ surfing often goes down in harsh and unforgiving environmental conditions, so being comfortable can go a long way to enhancing the experience. Luckily through these manufacturers we now have materials and tech that make you wonder how our forefathers got by in rugby jerseys out at Manu Bay in August. The Winter Wetsuit Feature check it out!
