Massachusetts born, but Hawaii raised Garrett 'GMac' McNamara is part daredevil, part surfer. A regular nominee at the Billabong XXL Awards, he is known for his efforts searching the globe for the largest waves, and in most cases finding them—whether it be by towing in behind a helicopter, jetski, paddling in, or via jet-powered surfboard. In 2002, McNamara won the inaugural Tow Surfing World Cup at Jaws. He won Best Overall Performance in 2003 and in 2007 at the Billabong XXL Awards, and the Monster Paddle Award for largest paddle-in wave of the year in 2007. McNamara is well known for his record-breaking waves at Praia do Norte beach in Nazare, Portugal and also is the first person to have surfed waves created by falling glaciers.
