Dramatic day drops Pro Tenerife field from 96 down to 16

Las Americas Pro Tenerife

Euskadi's Ruben Vitoria advances into the final 16

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 February, 2018 - The Las Americas Pro Tenerife, Stop No. 2 on the World Surf League European Qualifying Series, completed a critical day of competition to shrink the men’s field from 96 originally down to just 16 at the end of day three. Conditions degraded slightly from yesterday but still offered clean two foot surf and the occasional three foot set, peeling down the reef of Las Americas.

Out of the twenty-four men’s heats surfed today, the most notable win was that of local junior surfer Diego Suarez Diaz (CNY), a 17 year-old from the northern coast of Tenerife, in Round Two. Diaz took on a stacked heat and dominated the 25-minute exchange with his radical and stylish brand of surfing on the long lefts on offer.

“I live in the North and only really come here when it’s pumping, so I don’t really know the spot all that well,” Diaz said. “Today was fun though, I got a couple of nice waves. I want to start doing more QS events in Europe and maybe internationally if I get the chance. But for now my main goal will be my last season in the juniors.”

A competitor on the junior European scene for the past five years, Diaz eyes a final effort in the under-18 category this season, as well as transitioning to the Qualifying Series in the near future. The caliber of surfing he displayed today indicated he’s more than ready to take on the older generations on a regular basis.

“It’s kind of strange to surf at home, all the events I do are in places where I don’t know anybody,” he added. “I’d love for this event to get bigger, I remember going to Lanzarote when it was a Prime event and it was great to see that. Round Two was a really hard one but I’m not thinking ahead of myself, I take each heat at a time and try not to get nervous like I do sometimes.”

Unfortunately Diaz’ future was later decided in an uneventful, wave-starved heat in the afternoon, where the battle for average scores didn’t turn in the his favor.

Compensating for his loss was the remarquable Spanish and Canarian contingent’s results with the likes of Kalani Da Silva, Endika Garai, Vicente Romero, Ruben Vitoria, Julen Egiguren and Yael Pena all advancing into Round Four.

“I just tried to be patient and select the right waves so I’m stoked it paid out,” Da Silva said. “I’m from Fuerteventura, one of the other islands of the archipelago, but we’re a community and I can definitely feel the support of the locals here.”

Paul Cesar Distinguin (FRA) locked in the day’s upset, eliminating fellow Frenchmen Marc Lacomare and Nelson Cloarec in Round Three. Distinguin surfed a smart heat and posted his highest score of 8.07 on a combination of only two powerful forehand turns to grab the win.

“It’s always hard to compete against your friends, I was hoping one of them would make it too but it went the other way,” Distinguin said. “It’s pretty tough to get a good rhythm going out there so I tried my best to feel the energy of the waves and be on the best ones this time.”

Adrien Toyon (FRA), Hodei Collazo (EUK), Maxime Huscenot (FRA) as well as Canarians Luis Diaz and Jonathan Gonzalez were a few big names who did not make it through the second day of competition in surprise eliminations in Rounds Two and Three.

Surfers and event officials will be back on deck at Las Americas Thursday at 8:45 a.m to check out conditions and decide whether to run competition on the fourth day of the event’s waiting period.
