Reunion Island reeling from latest shark attack

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 February, 2017 - A 26-year-old man was bodyboarding at the mouth of the Mat River on the north-west coast of Reunion Island when he was attacked by a shark.

Local media reports say the unnamed man was surfing with friends in an area closed to water activities and that local fisherman had warned the group of bodyboarders that there were shake nearby.

The BBC reports that this is the eighth fatal shark attack in six years. Local authorities have urged the public to observe signs prohibiting water use in dangerous areas.

The government and various private groups have recently used a combination of bans, nets and shark patrols to bring surfing back to Reunion. The island’s surf tourism has also been hit hard by the rise in attacks.

850,000 people live on the French territory. Amid the rash of attacks, which have rattled authorities in the popular tourist destination, measures to prevent shark attacks have been brought in such as shark nets, beach monitoring and swimming bans.

Jeremy Flores and Quiksilver put together a video about the dramatic affects to surfing on the island in the shadow of the shark attacks.
