Laeticia Brouwer fatally attacked while surfing with her dad

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 April, 2017 - A 17-year-old girl was killed by a shark while surfing at Wylie Bay in Western Australia. The attack happened on Monday afternoon about 4 pm local time.

Laeticia Brouwer was surfing a spot called Kelp Beds with her dad when she was pulled under and the shark reportedly bit off her leg.

According to a report in Perth Now her dad was on the other side of the lineup at the time of the attack and heard her scream before she was pulled under water by the shark. Her father tried to get to her and the shark to do something, but sadly was unable to.

Laeticia’s father and another surfer pulled her to shore where she was rushed to Esperance Hospital. She had lost a lot of blood and doctors were unable to save her.

The victim and her family were spending the day at the beach for Easter Monday, the traditional day-off after Easter Sunday. Her mother and two siblings were at the scene as well.

The area is known for a large population of great white sharks. Authorities haven’t confirmed the type or size of the shark, but said it was probably a great white.

Wylie Bay has reported several shark sightings and activity since an attack in 2014 in which a local man lost both his hands and part of his arm while surfing in October 2014.
